DePuy Hip Implant Cases Consolidated in Texas MDL

The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation ("JPML") ordered on Monday that several cases currently pending in different federal courts be transfered and consolidated in Texas. The JPML created a new multidistrict litigation ("MDL") in the Northern District of Texas. The MDL involves cases related to Johnson & Johnson's DePuy Pinnacle Acetabular Cup Systems hip implants. So far three cases and 54 follow along cases have been ordered to join the MDL.
These cases involve metal-on-metal hip replacements manufactured by DePuy Orthopedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson. The hip replacements are coming under increased scrutiny due to their high failure rates. Numerous patients are reporting that the hip replacements are loosening from the hip bone causing serious pain and often requiring surgical replacement.
DePuy has come under fire previously for its ASR Hip Resurfacing Systems. Currently more than 1,000 cases are pending in that litigation in Ohio.
