Recalled Windstar Minivan Blamed in Man's Death

According to the Chicago Tribune, the family of Sean Bowman blames Ford Motor Company for a defect in its Windstar minivan that caused his death.  Mr. Bowman was driving a Ford Windstar when it's rear axle cracked in half.  The broken axle caused the car to veer out of control and crash into a nearby building killing Mr. Bowman.  One week later, his family received a recall notice in the mail from Ford stating that the 2001 Windstar's axle should be checked out due to the possibility that it could corrode and break.  The letter was received 6 weeks after Ford announced the recall in August 2010.

On August 27, 2010, Ford announced it was recalling 575,000 older-model Windstars.  The recall was for vehicles with model years 1998-2003 that were sold in states where the heavy use of road salt can cause more corrosion, including New England, the mid-Atlantic and Great Lakes regions (the "Salt Belt" states).  This recall is the 11th for Windstars.
