According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Bassett Furniture Industries, Inc. recalled about 90,000 drop-side cribs after over 154 reports of hardware failure. Luckily none of the incidents resulted in serious injury to the children involved.
The cribs involved in the recall were sold nationwide from January 2000 through August 2010. These cribs were sold on the Internet and by retailers including Wal-Mart, Target and Babies 'R' Us.
The CPSC has taken the position that drop-side cribs are a "deadly hazard" according to CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum. At least 32 deaths have been attributed to drop-side cribs since January 2000. The CPSC plans to propose new crib requirements that will ban the drop-side design.
