On May 26, 2011 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced
a voluntary recall of around 1 million pool and in-ground spa drain covers.
Though there have been no
injuries reported yet, the drain covers were recalled due to incorrect safety ratings
regarding the flow of water through the cover. Drain covers were mandated
by a 2008 law intended to prevent accidents in which swimmers can get
trapped underwater by the suction of pool or spa drains. The CPSC found
that many of those drain covers were certified by labs that used faulty
The following manufacturers' drains were recalled: A&A Manufacturing
of Phoenix; AquaStar Pool Products of San Deigo; Color Match Pool Fittings
of Surprise, Arizona; Custom Molded Products of Tyrone, Georgia; Hayward
Pool Productions of Elizabeth, New Jersey; Pentair Water Pool and Spa
of Sanford, North Carolina; Rising Dragon USA of Sweetwater, Tennessee;
and Waterway Plastics of Oxnard, California. The drains were sold between
December 2008 and April 2011.
Pool owners and operators who have one of the recalled pool or spa drain
covers should contact the manufacturer to receive a replacement or retrofit,
depending on the model. Except for kiddie pools, wading pools, and in-ground
spas, retrofit or replacement of installed covers are not required in
pools with multiple drain systems or gravity drainage systems or for covers
installed before December 19, 2008.
